Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker

As claimed:

Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker is a great ice cream making machine that’s capable of churning out one and a half quarts of every frozen dessert including yogurts and sorbets apart from soft serve and hard ice cream. The large, one and a half quart freezing bowl is sufficient for at least five people for a voracious treat while the fully automatic mechanism takes care of all the troubles that one might face making frozen desserts.

The maximum span required to create a bowl full of any frozen dessert is half an hour and every step is detectable through the transparent plastic lid; fitted with a feeder cap, it makes very convenient adding ingredients bringing the churning process to a halt.

For best results, it is recommended to stick to the recipes and accompanying instructions, the former ranging from preparations as simple as orange slushy to many an excellent recipes as iced strawberry soufflé and beyond within max of half an hour. The recipes also leave plenty of room for further additions and modifications.

Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker

The Krups 358-70 La Glaciere ice cream making machine suits being called a compact and multipurpose ice cream maker. A smaller size and easy usability has been tailored to suit today’s compact kitchens and simple artistic lines.

The freezing bowl requires 8 hours flat inside the freezer before mixing up a batch, but at the same time, the powerful motor cuts down on the final time length. It’s able to push through any amount of thickness with ease, unlike many an ice cream maker that stop half way.

The best desserts that can be created with the La Glaciere are the Cantaloupe Sorbets and Minted Melon slushy and complies well with almost every recipe in the Ben & Jerry’s cookbooks.

As found:

The Krups 358-70 La Glaciere ice cream making machine has a base that serves as the seat for the cylinder and has only one control switch that switches ‘on’ and ‘off’ the unit. The cylinder fits on the base, after which, the paddle locks on its top, through the see-through lid. All that’s required after is switching on the machine and pouring in the mixture; the hole on the cover comes particularly handy in this aspect. This removes the chances of the paddle being stuck in the hardened mixture later on, if the mix is poured first and then the machine is turned on.

Despite the directions claiming an 8 hours span in the freezer for the freezing bowl, it’s best to take it up to a full day (i.e. 24 hours) for hardened ice cream; for soft serves, slushy-s, sorbets and yogurts, the 8 hours span serves quite well. The same applies for the churning time; while 20 minutes are absolutely fine for the sherbets, yogurts and slushy-s, for the hardened ice creams with satisfactory consistency, nothing less than 45 minutes suffices.

This is a bit risky as well, since the canister also loses heat, so beyond 48 minutes, the hardness tends to reduce. And of course, the post freezing part exists here as well, though much lesser than what’s required for an ice cream making machine of an equivalent category. For the Krups 358-70 La Glaciere, the canister (with the ice cream in it) needs to be in the freezer for as little as fifteen minutes. However, pre-freezing the ice cream mix for round about twenty minutes gets rid of the post-chill session handsomely.

The toughest part of all seems to be making up the mind for a particular ice cream, because the La Glaciere makes over a hundred different preparations just like they are available over the counters. But things are bit tricky if using fruits; they need to be frozen for at least half an hour before being added to the mix.

All that was about how great the Krups La Glaciere is; now, it’s about a few flaws (read manufacturing defects) that exist in some of the machines. Albeit easy to wash, dry and store, the freezing bowl in some do LEAK, but it’s nothing that can’t be fixed.

The top collar of the bowl requires being twisted CLOCKWISE for freeing it while holding the bottom part stable. This reveals the gasket, the part that is often pushed out of its seat by the expanding freezing liquid. Resetting the gasket is as simple as pushing it down and turning the outer plastic bowl COUNTER CLOCKWISE.

All in All:

An ice cream maker that scores real high due to its ease of use, the delicious results and a quick, zero-trouble cleanup procedure for at least six months, after which, the paddle might require a little servicing for it to lock properly on the lid. Otherwise, a convenient piece of equipment worth every penny that goes into it.
