For first time automatic ice cream machine owners, the Krups GVS till now has proved a good choice if directions (pre-freeze et al) are followed; those with the necessary common sense are still enjoying a dollop a day while those who stuck strictly to the instruction booklet are compromising with softies and shakes. However, there have been quite a few many questions around regarding the granular texture as opposed to the smooth and creamy consistency expected of the end product.
As found:
A lovable piece – the Krups GVS142 – though it would have looked prettier with a few more metal parts thrown in. The plastic is tough, all right, but not when dropped from a few feet above. The plastic casing is just enough to withstand the cleanup mauling and thus requires a bit extra care to handle. However, the spatula is strong enough to cut through heavy, whipped creams. Wonder how the 10-Watts motor does that.
The two hours of post-freeze is an hour lesser than what the rest take; this part could be omitted if the mood is for some thick soft serve. It rendered to something between hard cream and soft cream, so cone lovers might be delighted. The graininess does exist and thus, extra care needs to be taken while preparing the ice cream mix. This Krups 1.5 creates some very small but nasty icicles otherwise and also traps air in. No idea if it is because of the specially designed spatula.
All in All:
The Krups GVS142 11/2 Quart Automatic ice cream making machine is a good choice for taste buds habituated to varied ranges of frozen sweetness, although better suited for experienced people with patience to form the base mix well.
Given that the bowl stays in the freezer forever (except for when in use inside the ice cream machine’s unit) and accommodating the mix for a couple of hours prior to the churn, there is no reason why one must not get successful if things are tried and tested over a moderate span. This is for the differences in the paddle design; the usual two-part paddle design takes longer than this one and too much of churning with the new paddle makes the ice cream go soft.
